In Alten's cursive hand in graphite on verso of panel, "A view taken/bayou at North Park, Grand
Rapids,
Mich./in year 1890/Mathias Alten" (signature). This writing has often been mis-read as, "A
view taken
'beyond' (sic) North Park..." The mis-read word, however, is clearly, "bayou."
and not, "beyond."
Additionally, although the writing indicates the year 1890, the painting is clearly dated next to the
artist's
signature as "'98."
