Inscribed on the canvas verso in block lettering the word "ALTON" (sic).  Inscribed in pencil on the stretcher verso "G. H. Albers" along with the title "Marsh Haying" and pencilled framing notations.

Mr. Gerrit H. Albers, likely the first owner of this canvas, was a lawyer in Grand Rapids, MI  during the first decade of the twentieth century. He later relocated to the vicinity of San Antonio, Texas where he died in 1936.

The frame verso retains (in 2012) a paper "C. L. Harvey" 59 Monroe Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan frame shop label.
